1983 BMW R80

The latest creation is a 1983 BMW R80 Urban Scrambler for their new friend Ale of Tulum, Mexico. "Hey Chris & Rebecca" says Ale, "My 1971 R50/5 is too tall for me, plus I would like to have more power and more brakes. I like the idea of no chrome and a olive drab green gas tank without it looking like it was built for the military…”. The mighty duo of Boxer Metal drew up a plan and gave Ale a couple simple drawings and a thumbs up was given from him to build the bike. They started with a 1983 BMW R80RT stripping off the original body work, as well as stripping the bike down to the frame. The frame and swing arm were powder coated. A 70's BMW police tank was sourced and painted flat olive drab green. Instead of building a custom rear frame and seat they decided to contact Down and Out Motorcycles in the UK for one of their seat and rear frame combo kits. Known for building custom BMW wheels the Boxer Metal team built a set of custom wheels for this build. They decided to modified BMW hubs, Buchanans stainless steel spokes, with 18" Borrani rims. All made to work with BMW brembo brake calipers. This is a well wanted conversion for many BMW airhead riders and builders. In order to make the bike fit their customer, Ale, they contacted Ted Porter at the Beemer Shop for a set of custom length YSS shocks & Boxer Metal did their magic on the front suspension. Along with the 18" front wheel and the suspension modifications they were able to safely lower the bike enough to fit the customer. It was also decided to keep most of the electric stock other that and Acewell 2853 instrument and Rizoma bar end signals and tail light/ signal and license plate light. The brakes were left stock other than the Spiegler stainless steel brake lines. Front fender, license plate mount, battery box, acewell instrument mount, and exhaust were custom made Boxer Metal parts. Attention to detail was paid replacing steering head bearings, swing arm bearings, all rubber parts, and using proper/same standard BMW hardware.
ENGINE: The engine is a stock BMW 800CC that has been rebuilt by Boxer Metal with an Alpha ignition system. Stock 32mm Bing Carbs rejetted for the Boxer Metal custom exhaust. The main idea in the build was to keep it simple and clean using as many stock/standard BMW parts for maintenance and serviceability anywhere in the world.
